Thermodes that put the heat where the solder is.

A thermode is a shaped block, not a pointed tip. Its job is to press a joint flat and pass a pulse of heat through the whole contact area at once. V, U, T, DK and grooved faces cover most FPC, enamelled-wire and connector work; anything else is made to drawing.

The face is the process.

Definition: A hot-bar thermode is a heated tool that bonds a flexible circuit, an enamelled wire or a connector tab by pressing it against a substrate and passing a current pulse through the tool. The face shape controls pressure and heat distribution; the body controls how fast the pulse reaches the face.

In hand soldering, the tip touches one joint at a time. In hot-bar bonding, the thermode touches the whole row at once, and the shape of the face decides where the pressure lands. A V face centres an enamelled wire; a U face cradles it; a T face concentrates heat on a narrow tab; a DK face leaves a clearance beside a component; a grooved face bonds several leads in one pass.

Because the face is the process, most thermodes are made to drawing. We machine the body, lap the working face flat, break the edges to a controlled radius and check the result on a surface plate. The drawing revision travels with the batch so a replacement tool can be compared with the one it replaces.

Selection

From the joint to a code.

Start with what the joint needs, not with the part number you last bought. The codes below are examples within the series, not the only options.

Joint or taskFaceExample codeWhy
Enamelled wire, singleVV-1.0 / V-1.5Centres the wire, strips and bonds
Enamelled wire, bundleUU-1.5 / U-2.0Cradles the bundle without flattening
Narrow connector tabTT-1.0 / T-1.5Concentrates heat on the tab
Component clearanceDKDK-2.0Leaves room beside the body

Face width and reach still have to be checked against the board or the holder. Send the dimensions and we will narrow the table to two or three codes.

Model names describe the machine a part fits. XANJO replacement parts are independent parts, not original equipment manufacturer parts.

Questions we are asked

Fitting, drawings and ordering.

What is a thermode made of?

The body is machined from a heat-resistant alloy and the working face is lapped flat. The exact alloy and any coating depend on the process temperature and the number of cycles, so they are confirmed on the drawing rather than assumed.

Can you make a thermode from a drawing?

Yes. Most thermodes are made to drawing. Send a PDF or a dimensioned sketch with the face width, the body height, the mount and the thermocouple position if one is needed. A sample tool follows in five working days.

How flat does the face need to be?

Flat enough that the whole row sees pressure at the same time. We lap the face and check it on a surface plate; the acceptable deviation depends on the pitch and the substrate, so it is agreed per drawing.

Are these original equipment parts?

No. XANJO makes independent replacement thermodes. Machine names describe the mount and are used only to explain compatibility.

Send the machine model. We’ll send the drawing.

A model number, a holder photograph or an old part is enough. You get the series, the geometry shortlist and the published dimensions within one working day.
